SEVEN

Remember how I said I was going to give the wanna-be Zumba class at the boring gym a chance?  Remember how I wondered how many people would be there?  Seven!  There were seven people there.  That’s like a mob at this place.  Wow.  Class was not like Zumba, it was more like a memory exercise with latin and not-so-latin dance steps.  I know my brain got a workout, but my body didn’t have to work too hard.

That’s okay though because today was my second NROLFW workout (Stage 1, first B workout).  I think my legs hate me.  They hadn’t recovered from Saturday’s workout, plus some walking at the park, a day of real Zumba, and a day of fake Zumba.  Then today they had to do deadlifts and lunges.  They’ve asked for yoga tomorrow.   I think I can oblige.

This morning we got a late start.  It’s amazing how I can sleep until 7:30 if I’ve had to get up to let the dog out at 4:30.  She ate something bad, so saying “No” to her 4:30am request is not an option.  Because of the late start I was able to convince the BF to join us at the park!  He hasn’t been to our new park and I haven’t taken pictures yet because I usually have a dog leash in one hand and iced coffee in the other :)

Isn’t it pretty?

And of course there’s a place where squirrels congregate…

So we always make a detour over there…

And then we stop by the duck pond…

But she’s seen enough ducks.  All she cares about at this point is heading home to air conditioning and her breakfast…

I’m off to work with some snacks.  (These fruit strips are delicious and thick – in case you haven’t tried them.)

Have a wonderful day!

P.S.  Is anybody still on track with their August Fitness Challenge?  I am and I’m seeing good results!

Zumba class with ZumbaPeople!

I went to a Zumba class this morning held by my old favorite instructors!

Well,  a couple of them at least.

One was on vacation.  These are the instructors that kept Zumba fun for so long and helped me lose all my weight.  They have changed studios and I moved to Mayberry and now they are too far away to go regularly.  But today was so much fun… I’ll have to make the drive from time to time.

Zumba was surprisingly good for my sore muscles… while I was doing it.  Otherwise, I’ve been super sore all day.  AND I have another NROLFW workout scheduled for tomorrow!  Ouch.

I hurried home after Zumba and made a protein shake (good ol’ Cherry Almond Vanilla flavor).

I even painted my fingernails a wild color for Zumba!

Well I’m off to bed!  Tomorrow I may try the new zumba-wannabe class at the boring gym before the NROLFW workout.  Any guesses as to how many people will show up?  I figure I’ll wait outside and see if anyone else shows (besides me).  If it’s just me and the instructor – isn’t that more like couples dance than zumba? :)

New Rules of Lifting for Women

So I promised yesterday that I would say more about this, although I’m almost too sore to hold my arms up to type.  Do you think that means I overdid it?  I was definitely too sore to hold up a camera so you’ll have to use your imagination on this one!

The blogosphere has been buzzing about this book The New Rules of Lifting for Women.  Since I’m horrible about doing strength training, but I know how important it is, I decided to get this book and try the program.  And I want y’all to nag me about it!  Ask how the workouts are going.  Ask how I’m doing on it.  If you don’t hear me groaning when I sit down or get up, something must be wrong! :)

His book stresses lifting heavier weights, like a guy would do, and not being afraid of free weights or lifting more than a few pounds.  The workouts are full body workouts, using big muscles, to help build lean muscle (and slim down if that’s what you are looking for).  He recommends interval training for cardio and a diet of 30% protein.  He gives a sample diet in the book, but it’s not vegetarian so I’m having to modify that.  I’ve used Sparkpeople for years now and logging on there really helped me lose the weight.  Fortunately Sparkpeople has an iPhone app and it tracks the macronutrients (protein, fat, carbs) as well.

I have my next workout scheduled for Tuesday, so I hope I can move by then!  Tomorrow my favorite Zumba instructors are hosting a special demo class and I’ll be attending that.  With me moving, and them changing studios, they are too far away to attend regularly, but I sure miss them.  I’m hoping to post some pictures from tomorrow’s class!

And because no post is complete without at least one picture…

Frank, the baby bird who lived in my yard for a week.  Doesn’t he look like a Frank?
Frank’s mom feeding him berries :)
Kyra and Frank… with me in the background hollering “Don’t hurt the BABY!”

We miss you Frank!!

Zumba in the park

Yoga today was easy, but good.  I believe that counts as my stretching for the day!  I’m 4 for 4 in the August Fitness Challenge.

But let’s backup to last night…  One of my girlfriends asked me if I wanted to go to a Zumba class Wednesday night.  It would be free, but it’s outside at a park.  Hmmm… let’s see.  It’s our 32nd day over 100 degrees, we are having record-setting high temps (around 110), so of course I said, “Hell yeah!  How hot can it be at 8pm??”  107 degrees.  That’s how hot.  In case you were wondering.

There was a nice view at the park.

There were other fools people there.

I brought 3 bottles of water in varying states of frozen-ness. (Is that a word?)

Am I blurry from the heat?? :)

I thought it might be miserable, but really it was very, very fun.  It wasn’t too hot, I drank all the water, and the instructor was really good!  I’ll have to look her up and see where she teaches normally.  I really miss Zumba.  It’s how I lost all my weight (75 pounds! WOOHOO!) because I never got bored with it.  I could tell my hips and shoulders were out of practice.  Zumba would probably be great cross-training with running…

Well I’m off to a Chamber of Commerce bowling mixer.  I got a “new” bowling shirt.  Dad said, “Bowling attire required!”  I don’t think he knows what he’s in for :)
